Study: Long COVID in the Workers’ Compensation System in 2020 and 2021

The Workers Compensation Research Institute (WCRI) recently conducted a study examining the occurrence of long COVID among workers who filed COVID-19 workers’ compensation claims between March 2020 and September 2021, across 31 states.

The study offers a comprehensive view of up to 24 months post-infection, capturing both the early stages of the pandemic and the subsequent period when the delta variant was predominant and COVID-19 vaccinations became widespread. Initial phases of the pandemic were characterized by limited treatment guidance and overwhelmed medical facilities, resulting in challenges in accessing care.

The study found that as the pandemic progressed and vaccinations were introduced, patterns of recovery among workers experienced subtle changes. This research provides invaluable insights into the long-term effects and recovery trajectories associated with COVID-19 in the workplace.
